The Opportunity

Gunnedah Shire Council is a vital part of our thriving, warm, and welcoming community in the heart of the Liverpool Plains. Known as the "Koala Capital of the World," Gunnedah offers more than just its iconic wildlife. With a population of approximately 13,085, our town is a key commodity hub and a popular stop along the Kamilaroi and Oxley Highways.

We’re currently seeking a full-time Strategy and Assets Engineer to join our supportive and collaborative team. This dynamic role allows you to combine fieldwork—muddy boots and all—with detailed office-based strategic planning. You’ll play a critical role in ensuring that Council’s infrastructure assets deliver long-term value and meet quality standards for the community.

About You

We’re looking for a passionate engineer who thrives on problem-solving and working both on-site and behind the scenes. To excel in this role, you’ll need:

  • Qualifications: A tertiary degree in civil engineering.
  • Experience: Previous local government experience is highly desired, also proven ability to manage and ensure the quality of large datasets, and experience with on-site civil engineering projects.
  • Skills: Strong time management, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Knowledge: A sound understanding of infrastructure assets—how they’re built, maintained, and optimised for long-term value.
  • Interpersonal Abilities: Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills to deliver effective solutions for both individuals and the community.

While not essential, local government and project management experience will be highly regarded.

What We Offer

Joining Gunnedah Shire Council means becoming part of a community-focused team in a region with a fantastic sense of camaraderie. This role comes with a range of benefits, including:

  • Flexible Work Options: Enjoy an RDO every three weeks and relocation assistance to help you settle in.
  • Access to a leaseback vehicle.
  • Professional Development: Access to ongoing opportunities.
  • Supportive Environment: A positive team culture within a vibrant and growing local community.
  • Rostered Day Off: Every 3 weeks.

Your Core Responsibilities

As Strategy and Assets Engineer, you’ll work closely with the Manager of Engineering Services to develop and maintain strategic plans for Council’s infrastructure assets. Key duties include:

  • Ensuring infrastructure assets deliver value for community stakeholders.
  • Providing expert advice on strategic planning, financial analysis, and development options.
  • Managing consultancy contracts for infrastructure asset planning.
  • Offering technical support and quality administrative oversight.

Annual Salary of $118,570 - $130,879 (Grade 19) + 3.5% Civil Liability Allowance (Up To $4,580 p.a.) + 12% Superannuation Guarantee
